Postby Up Football Fan » Thu Sep 12, 2019 9:05 pm

WEEK 3. Not counting the 16 team West PAC, the other U.P. conferences have seen few, if any, conference games so far in the first 2 weeks. This week sees the first conference games in those other U.P. conferences. In 8-man, the crossover games in the Great Lakes continue to dominate the schedule. Leaves are starting to change and now it really feels like football season. Results of week 2 and year to date follow:

WEEK 2:

11-man: 15 C, 3 W = 83.33%
8-man: 6 C, 1 W = 85.71%
Totals: 21 C, 4 W = 84%

year to date:

11-man: 30 C, 5 W = 85.71%
8-man: 11 C, 3 W = 78.57 %
Totals: 41 C, 8 W = 83.67%

Friday Sept. 13th:

11-man:

Sault Ste. Marie (ON) Korah Collegiate (1-0) at Escanaba (2-0)...Non Conf.

The Eskymos have feasted on 2 Big North schools in their 2 wins to open the season. They host the Class B (in Michigan enrollment numbers) Colts this week. Korah is the defending champion of the Sault Ste. Marie (ON) Football League 2 years running now. They are a decent Canadian program, but they won't have enough for the hosts this week. Eskymos 35, Colts 14.

Menominee (1-1) at Gladstone (2-0)....GNC

This is very key game to kick off the GNC slate in 2019. The Maroons lost to a very good, and much bigger, Kaukauna squad last week. Gladstone got a nice win over Class A Gaylord last week. A win here will put Gladstone on the state map for sure. Menominee has a much better team that last seasons, and they find a way to get it done here. Maroons 24, Braves 20.

Hortonville (WI) (3-0) at Kingsford (1-1)...Non Conf.

The unbeaten Polar Bears have won 3 crossover games in the VFA (combination of Wisconsin Valley and Fox Valley conferences). This will be the first ever meeting between these 2 schools. Kingsford struggled to defeat a much smaller Shiocton team last week. They won't be able to overcome a much bigger school this week. Polar Bears 34, Flivvers 20.

Marquette (0-2) at Sault Ste. Marie (2-0)...Non Conf.

One of these seasons Marquette is going to get tired of losing to Traverse City schools. They have lost 11 straight to T.C. Central and T.C. St. Francis combined. No one can blame them if they are very eager to play the Soo this week. The Blue Devils have narrowly outlasted 2 Lower Michigan schools to open the season. But neither of those teams is as good as either Traverse City school Marquette has lost to. The visitors get win no. 1 here. Redmen 28, Blue Devils 7.

Calumet (2-0) at Westwood (1-1)...West PAC Copper

The visiting Copper Kings have won both of their games by wide margins to open the season. Westwood hung with Iron Mountain for a while last week before giving in. Calumet has played some staunch defense so far this year and that carries the visitors to another conference win this week. Copper Kings 34, Patriots 6.

Negaunee (0-2) at Hancock (2-0)...West PAC Copper

The Miners got way more than they bargained for in their loss to Calumet last week. Hancock has yet to give up a point this season, although the opponents were only L'Anse and Gogebic. Still, as long as the defense shuts out the opponents, then the offense can provide just enough to win. The Bulldogs do just that this week, as they get just enough points to beat the Miners. Bulldogs 22, Miners 19.

Iron Mountain (2-0) at Houghton (0-2)...West PAC Copper

This is the first road game of the year for the Mountaineers. They will enjoy playing on the nice turf at Houghton. The Gremlins were spanked last week by L'Anse. Going into this game, Iron Mountain is viewed as the more talented program. That talent shines thru here win a road win. Mountaineers 35, Gremlins 0.

Gogebic (0-2) at L'Anse (1-1)...West PAC Copper

The Miners have only scored 7 points combined in their 2 losses so far. The Purple Hornets got their offense in gear last week, putting up 39 points on Houghton. Unless Gogebic begins to find some offense, it will look like a winless season for the Miners. L'Anse gets the home win here. Purple Hornets 36, Miners 6.

Lake Linden-Hubbell (1-1) at Gwinn (0-2)...West PAC Iron

The Lakes were 7 seconds away from upsetting Ishpeming last week. This shows that no one in the West Pac Iron should over look the smaller Lakes. Gwinn lost at Manistique, which might be it's only chance to get a win this year. With confidence from their play last week, the visiting Lakes get a nice road win here. Lakes 29, Modeltowners 12.

Ishpeming (2-0) at Norway (1-1)...West PAC Iron

The Hematites dug deep and pulled out an exciting win at Lake Linden-Hubbell last week. They scored the winning TD with less than 7 seconds to play. Norway was holding off Munising in it's shutout win. The team with more experience usually wins these types of games. The visitors win here. Hematites 26, Knights 7.

Manistique (1-1) at West Iron County (2-0)...West PAC Iron

The Emeralds got the monkey off their back last week with a win over Gwinn. That ended thelr long 26 game losing streak (last win came against Rudyard in week 9 of 2015). The Wykons rallied in the 2nd half to hold off Bark River-Harris. This looks to be a cometitive game, but the 3 hour trek to Iron River is too much for the visitors. Wykons 35, Emeralds 14.

Charlevoix (2-0) at St. Ignace (1-1)...Non Conf.

These 2 rivals continue to play each other even though they haven't been in the same conference in years. The Saints have owned the series, winning 30 of the 42 games played. The Red Rayders are off to a nice start this year, after winning only 1 game in 2018. This is your basic coin flip game with the toss going to the hosts. Saints 21, Red Rayders 20.

East Jordan (0-2) at Johannesburg-Lewiston (2-0)...NMFL Legacy

The Red Devils have lost 2 close games so far. It would take their best game of the year to get a win this week. The host Cardinals look to get a leg up on the rest of the conference with a win here. Look for the hosts to go to 3-0 this week. Cardinals 40, Red Devils 6.

Harbor Springs (1-1) at Rogers City (0-2)...Non Conf.

The Hurons are off a very disappointing start, losing 2 close games, after earning a home playoff game in 2018. If they want to get back to the playoffs, they need to win this week. They still have upcoming games against Oscoda, Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace, among others. The Rams lost to Frankfort last week, but they will get win no. 2 this week. Rams 28, Hurons 13.

Frankfort (1-1) at Inland Lakes (0-2)...Non Conf.

The Panthers play their 2nd straight NMFL Legacy team this week, after beating Harbor Springs last week. The winless Bulldogs look to be headed for a very long season (again). They won't win this week, as the visitors are just that much better. Panthers 40, Bulldogs 0.

8-man:

North Dickinson (0-2) at Brimley (2-0)...Non Conf.

The Bays have opened up with 2 impressive wins so far. That's twice as many wins as they had in all of 2018. The Nordics stumbled at Cedarville and now make another long trip to the east this week. The hosts have some fast athletes this year and they will win this game with ease. Bays over Nordics.

Carney-Nadeau (1-1) at Cedarville (1-1)...Non Conf.

The Wolves have to find a way to get over their last second loss to Superior Central in week 2. They make the long trek to Cedarville in search of win no. 2. The host Trojans ran over North Dickinson last week. They have the benefit of playing at home this week, which is enough for them to get a win this week. Trojans over Wolves.

Rapid River (0-2) at Rudyard (1-1)...Great Lakes East

Nothing went right for the Bulldogs on their trip to Forest Park last week. They are sure glad they don't have to make that long trip anymore this season (unless they make the playoffs). This week they host the surprisingly 0-2 Rockets. Rapid River was run off the field last week by a fast North Central club. The Rockets still have some talent and they put it altogether this week for their first win. Rockets over Bulldogs.

Superior Central (2-0) at Forest Park (1-1)...Non Conf.

The visiting Cougars have given up 40 and 42 points in their 2 games, yet somehow were able to win both games. But their opponent this week is a different animal. It's never easy to win at Forest Park and the Cougars find that out this week. Forest Park will gear up it's running attack to win this game going away. Trojans over Cougars.

Saturday Sept. 14th:

11-man:

Munising (0-2) at Bark River-Harris (1-1)...West PAC Iron

Both of these teams have lost to West Iron County this season. Last week, the Mustang's offense took the week off and was shut out by Norway. The Broncos held a halftime lead at West Iron last week, before losing the game by 2 TD's. Look for the hosts to put it all together this week and hold off the visitors to pick up win no. 2. Broncos 27, Mustangs 14.

8-man:

Stephenson (0-2) at Engadine (1-1)...Non Conf.

It's the battle of the Eagles in this Great Lakes crossover game. The young S. Eagles have taken their lumps in their 2 games. This is their 3rd straight long road trip to the Eastern U.P. to start the season. The host E. Eagles found out exactly how good Pickford is last week. This week, look for the hosts to win easily. E. Eagles over S. Eagles.

Pickford (2-0) at North Central (2-0)...Non Conf.

It might only be week 3, but there is not doubt that this game can be looked at as the game of the year in 8-man in the whole state. The winner will have a leg up on homefield advantage come playoff time, not to mention be chosen by voters as the No. 1 team in 8-man in the state. It will be the strength of the Panthers against the speed of the Jets. Pickford has played arguably the better teams so far this year and has won both games going away. That is enough to give the visitors the edge in this game. Panthers over Jets.

Newberry (2-0) at Ontonagon (0-2)...Non Conf.

The Indians finally got on the field last week and beat Stephenson 32-8. Now they make the longgggg trek to Ontonagon this week to play the young Gladiators. This is a down year for the hosts, but the young players have to start somewhere. This is the first of 2 straight long road trips (next week at Forest Park) for the Indians. They win easily here. Indians over Gladiators.

Sorry GNC, but the upset special won't happen. The Soo beat Chegoygan on an absolutely terrible call, after a night of really bad calls. Not judgment calls, just not following the rules. Alpena then gift wrapped their game, so the Soo is 2-0 and should be 0-2. The Redman have played 2 good teams and showed flashes of being a good team. I also will agree with your "REAL Football" category. Good luck to the Braves tonight too, they've started out strong
