Football Game 10/12/19 Against Pickford
PRESS RELEASE
PICKFORD vs. STEPHENSON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12th, 2019
Stephenson High School has made the decision to withdraw the football team from competitive play for the contest against Pickford High School, scheduled for Saturday, October 12th, 2019 to protect the health and safety of our student-athletes. The current state of the football team precludes the program from providing a safe environment for the participants involved. Team members have received numerous injuries this season, with a substantial portion of our roster not medically cleared to participate or has injuries limiting their participation. The athletic department is not willing to compromise the health and safety of our student-athletes, and participating in a contest this week could prove to be detrimental to the Varsity football program. The team is still committed to each other and the idea of completing the season — this is a decision that we will revisit early next week based on the health of our student-athletes. The safety of our student-athletes is paramount and we will make every decision with their best interest in mind.

2019 WEEK 7 11-man teams in RED have qualified for the playoffs. 4 more 11-man teams can qualify this week with a win. In 8-man, the playoff teams are selected by playoff point averages and not win totals. Results for week 6 and year-to-date follow:

11-man:

Week 6: 11 C, 5 W = 68.75%
Y.-T.-D.: 79 C, 19 W = 80.61%

8-man:

Week 6: 6 C, 1 W = 85.71%
Y.-T.-D.: 33 C, 9 W = 78.57%

Totals:

Week 6: 17 C, 6 W = 73.91%
Y.-T.-D.: 112 C, 28 W = 80.0%

Thursday Oct. 10th:

8-man:

Rapid River (3-3) at Engadine (5-1)...Great Lakes East

The Rockets were all but written off by most folks after they lost their first 3 games this season. But with wins in their last 3 games, they have put themselves back in the playoff conversation. To stay there, a win this week is a must. Rapid River has to play Pickford next week before playing Superior Central in week 9. Engadine has had another nice season, with it's only loss coming to Pickford. The Eagles should be considered the favorite in this game, but the Rockets are playing their best ball right now. Rockets get a nice win. Rockets over Eagles.

Friday Oct. 11th:

11-man:

Gladstone (3-3) at Escanaba (5-1)...GNC

The Eskymos scored 19 straight points to come from behind and win that big game against Menominee. Now they face their nearest rivals. A win this week and Escanaba is back in the playoffs. Even without their starting QB Silverstone, the hosts have way more talent than the Braves heading into this game. Escanaba gets that 6th win this week with an easy win. Eskymos 36, Braves 12.

Red Wing (MN) (0-5) at Kingsford (3-3)...Non Conf.

With their win over Wausau East last week, the Flivvers have put themselves into the playoff picture. They need to win 2 of their last 3 games to get a chance at the playoffs. Coming to town are the winless Wingers. Red Wing will make the nearly 300 mile one-way trip to the U.P. but it won't be a very nice trip. The hosts should win this game going away. Flivvers 34, Wingers 0.

Menominee (4-2) at Marquette (2-4)...GNC

The Maroons had their chances last week, but fell just short of beating Escanaba. If it can cut down on their penalties they should do okay in their last 3 games. Marquette lost 2 games to Big North schools where they really should have won both. The Maroons can run the ball and do ball control. They do that this week and get win no. 5. Maroons 28, Redmen 14.

Rogers City (1-5) at Sault Ste. Marie (4-2)...Non Conf.

The Blue Devils lost a chance to solidify it's position on getting a playoff spot last week in it's loss to Gladstone. If they can win 2 of their last 3 games, they should be able to host a first round game. The Hurons got their first win on the season last week and should not be able to put up much of a fight against the Soo this week. Blue Devils 27, Hurons 13.

Calumet (5-1) at Houghton (2-4)...West PAC Copper

Even after it's loss to Iron Mountain last week, the Copper Kings are in the running to host a playoff game or two should they keep winning. The next 3 games are the biggest rivals for Calumet, all from the Copper Country. The Gremlins got win no. 2 last, but barely beat winless Gogebic. Houghton does not have enough to keep up in this game. Copper Kings 38, Gremlins 6.

Hancock (4-2) at Iron Mountain (6-0)...West PAC Copper

The Mountaineers reached goal no. 1 last week in getting a win and qualifying for the playoffs. Now it's time to focus on getting the conference title, and then onto hosting some playoff games. Hancock gave Westwood all it wanted last week before falling. Next week Hancock gets Calumet, so an upset this week would be great for the Bulldogs. Don't count on it here as the hosts stay unbeaten. Mountaineers 36, Bulldogs 6.

L'Anse (4-2) at Westwood (4-2)...West PAC Copper

These two teams may enter with the same record, but they are not much alike after that. The Patriots have given the 2 top teams in Class C all they wanted this year and that prepared them for the rest of the season. L'Anse needs to pull off an upset in 1 of it's final 3 games, which would be a humongous task. Westwood is at home and has more talent here. Patriots 26, Purple Hornets 14.

Gogebic (0-6) at Negaunee (4-2)...West PAC Copper

This game is the battle of the Miners this week. But that is the only thing they have in common. Negaunee is now on a roll, winning 4 in a row. Gogebic looks to be headed for a 2nd straight winless season. Negaunee should make quick work of visiting Gogebic this week to get win no. 5. N-Miners 35, G-Miners 0.

Manistique (2-4) at Bark River-Harris (4-2)...West PAC Iron

The Emeralds enjoyed winning their 2nd game of the season last week. That is the most wins they have had in a season since 2012, the last year they made the playoffs. Don't overlook this Manistique squad this year. The Broncos pulled away from Norway late last week to get it's 4th win. A win this week would be key for the Broncos if they want to get a playoff bid. Look for the visitors to get win no. 3 this week. Emeralds 24, Broncos 20.

Norway (1-5) at Gwinn (0-6)...West PAC Iron

Close but no cigar. That has been the Modeltowners montra so far this year. Last week they lost in OT to a decent Ishpeming team. Oh so close again. Norway let it's game against Bark River-Harris get away from them in the 4th quarter last week. These 2 teams are playing simply for pride. The home team gets it's first win here. Modeltowners 27, Knights 20.

Lake Linden-Hubbell (3-3) at Munising (0-6)...West PAC Iron

The Lakes have given every team fits this year, win or lose. That can only build character and confidence should the Lakes be able to qualify for the playoffs this year. Being in Class D, 5 wins is virtually a guarantee to get them in. The Mustangs don't have any postseason plans this year. They can only play spoiler. It will be the Lakes that spoil the hosts fun this week. Lakes 24, Mustangs 6.

West Iron County (5-1) at Ishpeming (4-2)...West PAC Iron

The Wykons are flying under the radar so far this year. Their only loss is to a very good Calumet team, 14-0. A win this week and the Wykons are back in the playoffs. Ishpeming needed OT last week to beat a winless Gwinn squad. The winner of this game takes control of the West PAC Iron this year. A blue and white team will win this week. And that winner will be the Wykons. Wykons 26, Hematites 20.

St. Ignace (3-3) at Inland Lakes (0-6)...NMFL Legacy

The Saints got a much needed win last week over East Jordan. That sets them up for a 3 game finish of the season where they will be favored in each game. IF they are able to win out, they definately will be in the playoffs. This week they travel to Indian River to play the Bulldogs, a team they have already defeated 52-0 earlier in the year. Expect more of the same this week as the Saints win again. Saints 36, Bulldogs 0.

Harbor Springs (5-1) at Johannesburg-Lewiston (6-0)...NMFL Legacy

This battle this week will basically determine the conference champion this year. The Cardinals are already in the playoffs and are setting themselves up to be hosts in some playoff games. The Rams got a huge win over a Class B Canadian team last week. But this week's opponent is the best team they will face this season. Jo-burg gets another win here. Cardinals 34, Rams 12.

Alcona (2-4) at East Jordan (1-5)...Non Conf.

Neither team here is headed to the playoffs so this game is merely for pride. Even though the Red Devils have lost 5 games, they have been competitive in most of those games. Alcona just lost last week to previously winless Rogers City. The Tigers make the trip across the tip of lower Michigan to East Jordan only to come up short this week. Red Devils 26, Tigers 15.

8-man:

Rudyard (3-3) at Cedarville (3-3)...Great Lakes East

This is a key game for both teams this week. The winner is one step closer to a playoff bid this year, needing to only win 1 more game (most likely) to get that bid. They are long time rivals in all sports but the Trojans have been much better on the football field as of late. Look for the Trojans to get a huge win here. Trojans over Bulldogs.

Pickford (5-1) at Gaylord St. Mary (6-0)

This game came about on Wednesday since Pickford's opponent (Stephenson) and St. Mary's opponent (Vestaburg) both had said they wanted to forfeit their game. Instead, both Pickford and St. Mary decided they wanted to play a game and not just sit home. St. Mary already has 2 forfeit victories this year and in their other 4 games, only Suttons Bay can be deemed as a halfway decent team this year. The Snowbirds have not played anywhere the type of teams that Pickford has already played. Look for the Panthers to go on the road and get a nice win here. Panthers over Snowbirds.

North Dickinson (1-5) at Forest Park (4-2)...Great Lakes West

After playing in the mud last week in it's loss to North Central, the Trojans get set to play the 3 worst teams in the GL West this year. First up is rival North Dickinson. The Nordics lost a heartbreaker at Newberry last week. But they will need to play perfect in order to upset the Trojans this week. Forest Park gets another win here. Trojans over Nordics.

Ontonagon (1-5) at Carney-Nadeau (2-4)...Great Lakes West

The Wolves set a school record last week by winning their 2nd game on the field in a season. (2 years ago they had 2 wins but 1 was by forfeit). Carney-Nadeau has a very good shot at getting to 4 wins this year, which is a huge accomplishment for such a young program. Ontonagon is small and young this year, but they are still out their trying. The Glads make the long trip to Menominee County but come out short this week. Wolves over Gladiators.

Saturday Oct. 12th:

8-man:

Brimley (4-2) at Superior Central (2-4)...Great Lakes East

This game could be billed as the "What Could Have Been" bowl, as both teams have been hit hard by injuries. Both teams had shown some promise early in the year but have falled on hard times the last few weeks. The Cougars do have some nice overall talent, albeit not much more than the Bays here. But the home team hangs on for the win. Cougars over Bays.

Pickford (5-1) at Stephenson (0-6)...Great Lakes X

Stephenson has decided to forfeit this game. It's probably for the good, as it will save Pickford some long travel expenses to go and win an easy game. Since PIckford has decided to play a game against Gaylord St. Mary this week, this will not go down on the overall record for either team this year.

Newberry (4-2) at North Central (6-0)...Non Conf.

The Jets virtually wrapped up a playoff bid with it's big win over Forest Park last week. Now they will have their eyes set on going unbeaten and hosting some playoff games. The Indians held on last week to beat North Dickinson, but will need to play error free this week in order to have any chance at an upset. The hosts stay unbeaten here. Jets over Indians.

Pickford and Gaylord SM have agreed to a non conference game due to other cancellations. Two really good teams!

see my updated post.....................personally, I hate how teams decide at the last minute to forfeit a game when they know they have no chance at winning that game. I'm not buying the argument every time that it's for "players safety"................football has been played for decades..................it was not safe in the 50's..............but you never saw the amount of the whimping out then as you see today.

That's easy to say unless you are the coach sending 125 pound freshmen up against really physical seniors. I've seen way to many good young leave the sport after a game like that and especially when your program is already struggling like Stephenson has been as of late. Pickford isn't only good, they are big, physical and athletic. I don't know exactly what Stephenson has but if playing that game required putting undersized underclassmen up against them, they did the right thing for their program and that is their JOB, to look out for their players.

I'm not buying that garbage argument 1 bit!!!!.........Stephenson coach know well before training camp this year what he was going to field as far as a team. He could have told the A.D. back then that he didn't want to play the likes of Pickford, Forest Park and North Central............but no, they waited until the 11th hour to inform Pickford that they didn't want to play them. That's a bush league move...............(Pickford was just simply lucky that Gaylord St. Mary also just happened to have their opponent back out of playing a game, thus allowing those 2 schools to schedule a game) ...Forest Park will be stuck in the same situation...as I'm sure that Stephenson will whimp out on playing the Trojans next week. Coaches and A.D.'s know well before the season starts if they have a team that can compete with the best teams. Just because you happen to have a down year is no reason to shaft your opponents. Lake Linden-Hubbell caught hell some years back by doing this..........and many coaches of teams that were to play the Lakes that year never forgot that, nor did they forgive them for pulling that crap.
