Stephenson is forfeiting their week 9 game to North Central......................no teams available for the Jets, so apparently they will just take the win and rest up for the playoffs.

2019 Week 9 The 2019 regular season comes to an end this week. As usual, the season goes by way too fast. There are still lots of teams fighting to get into the playoffs and many of them will be scoreboard watching all Friday night and Saturday. Results of week 8 and year-to-date follow:

11-man:

Week 8: 13 C, 4 W = 76.47%
Y.-T.-D.: 103 C, 27 W = 79.23%

8-man:

Week 8: 6 C, 1 W = 85.71%
Y.-T.-D.: 44 C, 12 W = 78.57%

Totals:

Week 8: 19 C, 5 W = 79.17%
Y.-T.-D.: 147 C, 39 W = 79.03%

Thursday Oct. 24th:

11-man:

Bark River-Harris (5-3) at Ishpeming (6-2)...West PAC Iron

The Hematites are back in the playoffs and with a win this week, they probably will host a first round game. The Broncos are still smarting from the 42-0 beating they took at the hands of Lake Linden-Hubbell last week. The Broncos have a slight chance to get in at 5-4, but will need plenty of help downstate for that to happen. Ishpeming gets the win here. Hematites 36, Broncos 6.

8-man:

Engadine (7-1) at Cedarville (5-3)...Great Lakes East

Both of these teams are "probably" in the playoffs next week, but Cedarville is still going to be on edge. A loss puts them close to the cutoff. If all the favored teams statewide win this week, then the Trojans should be in. Engadine wants to win this week, then perhaps they might be able to host a playoff game (should Rapid River manage to sneak in with a 4-5 record). The Eagles have played a little more consistantly this year and they get the win, but it will be close. Eagles over Trojans.

Stephenson (0-6) at North Central (8-0)...Great Lakes West

Jets get the easy 1-0 Forfeit win this week. They can rest up now and wait to see who they will host in the playoffs next week. Jets over Eagles.

Friday Oct. 25th:

11-man:

Escanaba (6-2) at Swartz Creek (1-7)...Non Conf.

The Eskymos can just burn the game film from last week's loss to Traverse City Central. Not much, if anything, went right in that game. Now they get to head downstate near Flint to play Swartz Creek. The Dragons are struggling this year, but that is ususally a yearly thing for this program. They somehow managed to make the playoffs last year, but have been blown out in most games this year. If the Eskymos can shake off the bus lag by game time, they should be able to win with ease this week. Eskymos 39, Dragons 7.

Gladstone (3-5) at Oscoda (7-1)...Non Conf.

There is not much for the Braves to play for in this week 9 game except to send their Seniors out on a winning note. The Owls are headed to the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row and 3rd time in the last 4 years. That's pretty good for a program that had struggled for years, especially after the nearby Air Force Base closed. Look for the hosts to get their 8th win on the season here. Owls 35, Braves 20.

Kingsford (4-4) at Marquette (4-4)...GNC

After some inexcusable losses to Petoskey and Alpena, the Redmen can still actually make the playoffs this year. They would need to win this week and then scoreboard watch to see how some other teams do downstate. At 5-4, Marquette would sit right near the cut line to get into the playoffs. Kingsford's hope to get to the playoffs is a much longer one. Way too many upsets need to happen in order for Kingsford to make it in, even with a Flivver win this week. The Redmen are playing good right now and they get an important win this week. Redmen 34, Flivvers 19.

Menominee (5-3) vs Hopkins (8-0) (at Petoskey)...Non Conf.

The Vikings may have an unbeaten record heading into this game, but they have not played near the type of schedule that Menominee has. None of the teams in Hopkin's conference are above .500, except for Hopkins itself. The Vikings do have a nice win over a very good Ravenna squad, but that happened way back in week 1. Since then alot can and has changed. Menominee knows there is no room for mistakes heading into this game. There are 9 (5-3) teams ahead of the Maroons this week in playoff points heading into week 9. There's that, plus a number of 4-4 teams that will be looking for that 5th win this week. Some folks think Menominee is already in win or lose, but that is not the case. They will be in though after a nice win this week. Maroons 28, Vikings 20.

L'Anse (4-4) at Calumet (7-1)...West PAC Copper

Calumet all but is assured of hosting at least 1 playoff game, and with a win this week, should be hosting perhaps 2. The Purple Hornets can actually make the playoffs also, but they must upset the No. 1 team in the U.P. to do it. After 3 very tough games in a row, one has to wonder how healthy the visitors are heading into this game. Calumet does not waste it's chance at hosting those playoff games and gets a win here. Copper Kings 38, Purple Hornets 14.

Gogebic (0-8) at Iron Mountain (8-0)...West PAC Copper

There are not too many games in high school football that are a given, but perhaps this game is the exception. The Mountaineers can play their 2nd string for most of the game this week and still get the win. Will this be the last game of the current co-op makeup of the Gogebic program? Ironwood, Bessemer and Wakefield-Marenisco just may want to go their own way after this season. Iron Mountain wins again this week. Mountaineers 48, Miners 0.

Houghton (2-6) at Hancock (4-4)...West PAC Copper

It's the annual Copper Bowl here, but other than that, there is nothing else more for these teams to play for. Hancock will be playing for a winning record, but it has no shot at getting into the playoffs. The rival Gremlins would love to knock off their rivals this week. Not so fast. The Bulldogs have played well all year, but just ran into some very good clubs this season. Still, Hancock has more than enough to get a win this week. Bulldogs 24, Gremlins 16.

Negaunee (6-2) at Westwood (6-2)...West PAC Copper

Don't be surprised it both coaches keep their playbooks close to the vest this week. It sure looks like no matter who wins this week, these 2 could be playing against each other next week in the playoffs (which is a much more important game than this week 9 game). The winner this week gets to host a game, but neither team wants to show the other team it's best plays. The Patriots get a late TD to get the win this week. Patriots 27, Miners 21.

Munising (0-8) at Gwinn (0-8)...West PAC Iron

There are 2 things at stake this week in this battle of winless teams. 1 is that the winner gets it's first win on the season. 2 is that the winner gets to avoid finishing last in the West PAC Iron this year. Gwinn has lost 2 games in OT this year so it has been closer to a win this year than has Munising. Look for the Modeltowners to get it altogether this week to get that first win. Modeltowners 26, Mustangs 6.

West Iron County (6-2) at Norway (2-6)...West PAC Iron

The Wykons bounced back nicely last week with a big win over winless Gwinn. Now that they have made the playoffs, the Wykons are looking to possibly host a playoff game. To do that they need to not overlook the Knights this week. This has been a bummer of a year for Norway. They can only play spoiler this week. These 2 schools played some memorable playoff games a few years ago, but that won't happen this year. West Iron does not have a letdown this week and gets win no. 7. Wykons 28, Modeltowners 7.

East Jordan (3-5) at Grandville Calvin Christian (1-7)...Non Conf.

The Red Devils sure wish they had played slightly better in games against Harbor Springs and Charlevoix. Had they won those games, they would be on the verge of getting into the playoffs this year. This week they visit the Grandville area. The Squires are playing an independent schedule this year and are not having much fun doing it. There is even talk at Calvin Christian of the Squire football program coming to an end after this season. For this week, the visitors get a nice road win. Red Devils 35, Squires 0.

Charlevoix (5-3) at Harbor Springs (6-2)...Non Conf.

These neighboring schools may not be in the same conference, but they still want to beat the other for sure. The Rams are back in the playoffs. The Red Rayders are in good position should they finish 5-4, but they would surely love to earn their way in. This is fairly close to a toss up game this week, as they have faired equally against similary opposition. The coin flip goes to the home team here. Rams 34, Red Rayders 20.

Johannesburg-Lewiston (8-0) at Inland Lakes (0-8)...NMFL Legacy

The Cardinals will have a chance to rest their starters early in this game. Jo-burg just needs to win the game to secure home field advantage for at least 2 rounds. No sense in playing the starters any longer than necessary here. The host Bulldogs really don't stand a chance in this game. Cardinals 42, Bulldogs 0.

8-man:

Pickford (7-1) at Brimley (5-3)...Great Lakes East

The Panthers are going to use this game as a tune up for the playoffs next week. Regardless if they are in District 1 or District 2, the Panthers will be hosting that first round playoff game in Division 2. The Bays are still in the playoff hunt themselves, but in Div. 1. Should the Bays lose, they might just find themselves at the no. 33 spot of the playoff point averages, which is 1 spot out of the running. Still, the Bays have had a nice comeback season in 2019. Pickford should win this game going away. Panthers over Bays.

Superior Central (2-6) at Rapid River (3-5)...Great Lakes East

The Rocket fans should be scoreboard watching on Friday night (and even Saturday). IF the right teams win, and lose, then the Rockets will find themselves back in the playoffs with a win this week. The Cougars can only look back at what might have been, had their starting QB not been injured earlier in the year. The Purple and Gold get a huge win this week. Rockets over Cougars.

Newberry (5-3) at Rudyard (3-5)...Non Conf

The host Bulldogs have no choice but to play the spoiler this week. They have no shot at getting into the playoffs even with a win this week. This is the Bulldog Senior's last game and they would love to go out a winner. Even if Newberry wins this week, they are in danger of not making the playoffs simply because their playoff point average is so poor. A loss will most definately knock the Indians out of the playoffs. This might be a surprise to some, but the hosts will get the win this week. Bulldogs over Indians.

Carney-Nadeau (3-5) at North Dickinson (2-6)...Great Lakes West

The Nordics earned their 2nd win of the year last week against Ontonagon. The Wolves last win came against that same Ontonagon squad. The winner of this game will finish 3rd in the Great Lakes West this year. Both teams have some speed to utilize. Carney-Nadeau has the better passing game and will eek out a close win here. Wolves over Nordics.

Ontonagon (1-7) at Forest Park (6-2)...Great Lakes West

The Trojans have got to be flying high after taking down the state's previously top ranked team Morrice last week. That win gave Forest Park a huge playoff point push, so much that the Trojans are in the running now to host a first round playoff game (but only if Rapid River makes it into the playoffs). Ontonagon is young and learning this year. Still, they managed to finish out the season. Look for this game to get out of hand early and often as the Trojans rest their starters early. Trojans over Gladiators.

Saturday Oct. 26th:

11-man:

Manistique (3-5) at Lake Linden-Hubbell (5-3)...West PAC Iron

The Lakes are playing their best football of the year in recent weeks. That sets them up well entering the playoffs next week. The Emeralds are having their best season since 2012, the last time they made the playoffs. Manistique lost to Bark River-Harris a few weeks ago. The Lakes just belted the Broncos 42-0 last week. Enough said there. Lakes 28, Emeralds 6.

Hart (1-7) at St. Ignace (4-4)...Non Conf.

IF the Saints do not make the playoffs this year, they can only blame themselves. They lost last week to a then 1-6 Rogers City team. A win this week is a must of course but the Saints will need tons of unexpected help statewide in order to sneak in. The Pirates play in the always tough West Michigan conference and are usually at or near the bottom of the conference standings every year. But playing in that conference toughens up even the bottom feeder of programs. The Saints cannot take Hart lightly this week. St. Ignace gets a win, but it will be a lot closer than most folks think. Saints 19, Pirates 12.

I left the Sault Ste. Marie/Gaylord game off the weekly list.

Soo wins 46-21 and thus qualifies for the playoffs with a 6-3 record.
