2017 Official UPFOOTBALL Poll

Postby upfootball » Sun Sep 17, 2017 9:31 am

So.... decided to do this for really the first official time of this site (I think). This is my personal poll. I may include the mods in this down the road. I probably should. We will start with this. The reason... It's good to have discussion. I think the UPSSA needs more discussion sometimes. I get the feeling many of them do not understand the Wisconsin opponents as well as they could to truly help them make a good poll.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with records as any poll should not. It is who is better than who and its an educated guess and teams will prove it wrong over the course of the regular season. The goal is get it right before the regular season ends. Debate and discussion is encouraged.

I will use same format as the UPSSA.

BIG 5
1. Menominee (3-1)
2. Escanaba (3-1)
3. Kingsford (2-1)
4. Gladstone (4-0)
5. Marquette (1-3)

honorable mention in order: Calumet (3-1), Hancock (3-1)

LITTLE 5
1. Norway (4-0)
2. Westwood (3-1)
3. Newberry (3-1)
4. Ishpeming (2-2)
5. Bark River-Harris (3-1)

honorable mention in order: West Iron County (3-1), L'Anse (3-1), Gwinn (2-2), Munising (2-2)

8 MAN
1. Stephenson (4-0)
2. Rapid River (4-0)
3. Ontonagon (2-1)
4. Forest Park (2-2)
5. North Central (2-2)

honorable mention in order: Pickford (4-0), Cedarville (4-0), Rudyard (3-1), Engadine (3-1), Superior Central (1-3), Brimley (3-1)

Good idea, I look forward to some lively discussion. In regards to the big 5, Lanse beat Hancock and Hurley handled Cal pretty well. It is a pretty good group when Gladstone is sitting at 4, considering the way they have been hammering people.

No 8-man teams from Eastern end? Have you actually seen any of the Eastern teams play? Seems a bit biased to me.

I am a bit biased. I think there are 5 outstanding teams in the WEC. Pickford and Cedarville are really good. Just cant get one of them above North Central at this time.

Hut Hut!! How are y'all? Nice idea U.P. Football, having a poll for this site. Polls are not really that far apart this week with valid points on both sides. 8 man has a difference of opinion though. The only question I would pose is when does a sub 500 team in the big five have to start winning those games to be a credible pick? I'm not saying that Marquette isn't a good team and maybe they are a top 5. I have'nt seen them personally. But at some point if a team is that good they need to win those "strength of schedule " games. Just a thought not a critical remark. Any poll has room for discussion and yes, the field will always determine the best. Good to be back on throwing in my 2 cents worth...after all these years it may be worth less than that!

Great question Frokyaker. It's open to opinion from week to week, but the best way to crack a poll is to play into it. Scheduling small weak schools isn't how to do it. It doesn't showcase what your truly made of. Marquette may be 1-3, but they have played tough competition and have been overall pretty competitive. Beating sisters of the poor 48-7 shows nothing.

I have seen Marquette. They are better than anyone in the WestPAC.... this year. Calumet, the UPSSA #5, was losing to Houghton 0-6 at halftime. I've seen Houghton. The Gremlins have no business winning a game this year. If Marquette and Calumet played... wise choice would be Marquette.

Ok. I will playfully take the bait. Did Newberry not just beat Norway by two touchdowns on Norways home field? If the field ultimately determines who is best..how is Newberry two slots behind Norway? Both are fine teams make no mistake and maybe schedule works into it but it looks funny. That night Newberry was the better team. Not saying if they played again Norway would cream them. Who knows? Just a weird look that's all. This submitted with all due respect as always

Yes, you bring up a good point: Newberry did win that game............BUT

I've seen both teams play..............and Norway is the better team.................the Knights gave the Indians that game............those things happen sometimes..........IF they played 10 times, Norway wins 9 times. That's why this vote went the way it did. ............the playoffs will determine this point anyway.

U.P Football fan.
You may be quite right about the 9 out of 10.......that must have been the one I guess. Certainly Norway did not play their best game. However you don't get a win on assumption. That night Newberry had the better night. Was that a fluke? Maybe. Maybe not. To this point the only FACT is Newberry won the head to head match-up. If they played again Norway could pound them. Time will only tell. We always say the field will be the judge. This judgement went to the Indians. Ultimately I agree with you. If the Knights play a cleaner game they PROBABLY win. But maybe not. When the Olympic Hockey Team beat the Russians in 1980, the Russians didn't advance because they could beat the USA 9 out of 10 times(which they probably could). Each game is it's own story. Playoffs loom ahead! Should be fun!

rankings don't have to be based on if a team just defeated another higher ranked team..

2 cases in point: Iowa State just beat an undefeated Oklahoma team...........yet no one in their right mind is going to rank Iowa St. higher in a poll than Oklahoma........

likewise, Rapid River beating Stephenson..............everyone who has seen both teams play all know that the Eagles are by far the better team........but the Rockets just have karma on their side this season........Eagles are still the better team.

upsets happen........but you still need to rank teams as to which ones are the overall better teams.........

On balance I agree. However the better team in whose opinion? How do you quantify karma? That night the" better team" was not the winner for whatever reason. If you have a winless team beating an undefeated team then yes,you don't rank the winless team over the other. But in the case of Rapid River and Stephenson with two unbeaten teams, the one who beats the other has to be on top. They keep score for a reason. Like I said Earlier..they could play again and Stephenson could wax them..who knows. Maybe Rapid has their number. Would love to see a re-match . The statement of let the field decide can't be changed to let the field decide unless we think the losing team is better. They MAY BE but THAT NIGHT they were not. That's the only point i am making...not saying anyone is "wrong".

that kind of logic suggests that Lake Linden-Hubbell should now be ranked no. 1 in the Little Five..............the Lakes beat Newberry, which beat Norway, which beat Bark River-Harris, which beat West Iron County.........etc..

Just more proof that theses polls mean absolutely nothing. voted by people very unfamiliar with the teams and go based on popularity contests. I will let you now who the #1 & 2 teams are on Thanksgiving week-end.

Gave them the game? Were you there or did you watch the film? Newberry turned the ball over twice inside the 5 yard line. They gained more than twice as many yards. Norways 2 late turnovers hurt their comeback attempt, but they were 2 touchdowns behind. I'm not saying Newberry should be number 1, not by any stretch. The loss at LL-H justifies these rankings. But your observations on last weeks game are way off.

I love the discussion. Bottom line in the Small 5... Outside of Westwood, it's a cluster right now. This team beats that team who loses to this team that beat that team, etc. Westwood is the only team to win all their games against teams in the Small 5.... of who they have played. There is no way to get the Small 5 correct. Any combination of top 5 can be argued legitimately.

This list was put together to get this kind of discussion going. Polls mean nothing? Yes I completely agree.... but in the same sense does a team like Gladstone deserve number one vote accolades for running away from the GNC to play the likes of Manistique? Absolutely not. It's asinine.

Interesting that move completely wrecked the MPC (all pulling a Gladstone move to apply to the Westpac) and made a scheduling nightmare for the GNC programs, yet some clown was impressed Gladstone beat Manistique by 40 so they had a number one vote most of the season. That stuff boils my blood. A situation where we have a top 5 of teams that could all beat each other on any given night in the Small 5 does not..

I like to think that Hancock could give Marquette a run for their money this year and beat them. I mean Marquette is only 3-4 and Hancock's sitting at 6-1. I realize there is a difference in the strength of schedules, but Hancock looks to be the better team this season.
