Has theer been anybdoy from the UP that went on to play at a Div 1 school that wasnt a BIG TEN or MAC school? I know of one walk-on but I am sure there is more then just him.

Condidering the Big Ten and MAC schools are the only Division 1 schools within a reasonable distance... I would be surprised if there were all that many. Gabe Leonard (Iron Mountain) walked onto Colorado, but not sure if he ever got a scholarship. You have to have financial support to be able to do that. Gabe had that.

RB Bob Nelson had a nice career at Yale. Late '70s, early '80s?

David Kimichik from Norway played at Cornell as defensive back around, I guess, the late 70's. I think his brother Al played at MSU for a while.

I assumed there would be some that I had not heard about. I forgot about Barr, he is proably the most recent one to play Div 1 that wasnt a Big ten or MAC school.

One of the many great Salani guys from Hancock went onto play football at Central Michigan. He was a punter there I think. That was in the mid-80's.

There have been many athletes from across the U.P. that have gone on to play at Central Michigan. C.M.U. has been division 1 since the late 1970s

Bob Nelson from Westwood played at Yale in the early 1990s, as did his high school teammate Brian Honkala. Nelson was a running back and Honkala an offensive tackle.

There was some kid from Mid-Pen in the 90's that walked on to UNLV and was maybe on the team for a year or two. I can't remember his name!

This might be the definitive list of 90's and onwards:

Wisconsin
Rob Roelle (Kingsford)

Colorado
Gabe Leonard (Iron Mountain)

CMU
Joe Ostman (St. Ignace)
Nate Lindquist (Munising)
Anders Hill (Hancock)
Eric Salani (Hancock)
Tom Ellis (DeTour)
Nick Thompson (Menominee)
Bernie Rosendahl (Gwinn)
Alex Briones (Ishpeming)
Bryan Schorman (Iron Mountain)
Desi Schultz - (Gladstone)
Kent King - (Gladstone)
Boris Martyz (Marquette)
Charlie Bush (Escanaba)
Jason Lundin (Escanaba)

MSU
Jeff Tazelaar (Newberry)
Chris Salani (Hancock)

WMU
Chad Sherman (Gwinn)

Michigan
Gary Rose (Kingsford)
Jon Saigh (Kingsford)

I don’t know if there any more that played at Western other than Sherman. Are there other players besides Thompson from Menominee that played D-1? And to correct a previous poster, Don Barr did not play at Air Force. He was at the academy and only played on the JV roster and was never on the official roster before transferring to NMU.

Also Herman Gundlach from Houghton went to Harvard and joined the NFL in 1935, the year before the draft was established.
