Those first 3 games will be very tough. So Fondy must have had a one year contract with Menominee?

Not sure what Marquette and Gladstone return. Wausau East' s football program is really struggling.

Then 2 tough GNC opponents to end the regular season... yes, Kingsford does not have an easy path that's for sure!

Both Gladstone and Marquette return a good team. The first three games for the Flivvers are as tough as it gets. I doubt anyone in the UP has a tougher schedule. If somebody does it will either be Menominee or Escanaba, certainly not the WestPAC.

The Maroons must have a new game 3 this year. I think Fondy was a last minute pick up for them last year just to fill an opening.

Any home and homes between GNC schools?

Hopefully not. That's not something that is in the least bit ideal, but with the options of teams to play dwindling.... who knows.

You can see this snowball effect picking up speed can't you? As much as nobody wants the MHSAA do get involved, the cherry picking of schools with their schedules in football is sooner or later going to force a change in the system.

I know ya’s don’t want the MHSAA micro managing- I get it. I think one way is to establish districts or regions- then break the schools down into divisions- not classes. For football they go divisions anyways.

Then just mandate 6 or more of your opponents must be the same divisions or higher. Otherwise you are not playoff eligible.

Then tell them “If you schools still can’t cooperate, we’re gonna step in and WIAA your ____ !”

Edit: or can play opponents “so many divisions down.” This way Marquette and Esky can play, etc.

Something along those lines. Maybe someone can tweak it better. Just trying to find solutions.

I agree with your line of thinking Hueby.

A tweek to it would be this.

You can only play down as much as you play up. Lets take Ishpeming for example and their schedule for next season. Ishpeming is Class C.

West Iron County - Class C
Lake Linden - Class D
Norway - Class C
Gwinn - Class C
Manistique - Class C
Munising - Class D
Negaunee - Class C
Westwood - Class C
Bark River - Class D

Lets implement a system where you can for example.... if your a Class C school you can only play one Class D school unless you play up and play a Class B school in a game, which would then give you the availability to play 2 Class D schools. So on and so forth every time you play another game up.

Ishpeming Schedule is:

6 Class C schools - same size
3 Class D schools - playing down
0 Class B schools - playing up

This makes 2 of Ishpeming's games against Class D schools ineligible for the 6 wins and your in. Also does not count towards playoff points. They are essentially exhibitions for Ishpeming.

Would that help solve cherry picking your schedule in the State? You bet your ass it would.

It's not a perfect system however. You would have to make exceptions for Class A teams like Marquette who have no way to play up.
