Top 5 Esky Teams

Postby nabafanfan » Mon Oct 23, 2017 8:52 am

With the playoffs around the corner I was thinking back to historical Esky teams and how they all stack up against each other. So i am posing this question. List the top 5 (1 being the Best) Esky football teams over the past 30 years and maybe some color behind it (a few stand out players, games, etc.). I will start:

1. 1981 (Tapini, great team, won the state title. Enough said)
2. 1979 (Tough loss in finals)
3. 1992 (great team, think Charlie Bush was on this squad, tough loss at Reefs Puffer)
4. 1998 (great tailback in braun, cant remember first name, just remember great team and one of toughest losses in school history to Saginaw)
5. 1989 (trying to remember who was on this team?)

Mine...
1. 1981 (untouchable)
2. 1982 .(team GYPED out of the playoffs with a Playoff points tie, and a coin toss Lets Saginaw Arther Hill (if memory serves) in.
3. 1980 team (same Gyped by a .25 point of making playoffs. Escanaba could have run a 4 years from 79-82 to be honest.
4/5 TIE. 1989 (Nick Bink QB lead team goes 9-0 and gets the unfortunate draw of playing Muskegon in the first round in rainy Petoskey, side not this entire game can be seen on youtube; Nick Bink would later go on to QB at NMU).
4/5 Tie. 1995 (Brent Lindstrom breaks 1979 Dean Altobeli's season rushing record, 2 loss team gyped from playoffs by a half point, both losses come to WI State Champion Marshfield and Kingsford who would go to the state Championship game; in my mind this team had the best chance post the 81 state champs, and one of the most dominant Defenses since the 81' team, their 7-2 record, without a playoff game makes this team easily overlooked)
5. 1998 (Jason Braun beats Lindstrom's rushing record, and they get HOSED by refs vs. Saginaw in Gaylord, last team to beat Menominee until this year). ( I wish someone had the tape of this game to watch that call that seals Saginaw's victory and calls back an Escanaba touchdown in the last seconds...This call and the Phantom Marine City Catch vs. Kingsford prob the 2 worst calls I have ever seen personally)

As I think back to the old days they were pretty darn good in the Mickey Moses years also but have no details.

Agreed on the 1995 team as well.

The offensive lines for the 1995 (N. Anderson, Jungles, etc.), 1998 (Martin, Gerou, etc.), and 1981 (Frazer, Lawson, etc.) teams were dominant. That along with great backs (Lindstrom, Braun/Balsavich, and Altobelli) made for some great rushing games! Been a while.

I rarely post on here but had to in this case. Check the record and score margin of the 1973 team. Of course, this was prior to playoffs, but...... Wayne Schwalbach, Mike Cvengros, J Young, D Criel backfield

In order of teams I have actually seen (did not get to see great teams of late 70's and early 80's).

89 team was the toughest team I saw in person. Bink at QB. Line was loaded. Tough draw for first playoff game.

95 team.

92 team.

98 team

These last couple Esky teams are very close.... but you I never make a final call until they are all done playing.

I can only go by what I've seen myself so 1986-present more or less...so that rules out the 60s, 70s and 82 team.
But based on the hardware 1 and 2 have to be the 1981 and 1979 squads. I was at the Athletic Field with my parents to welcome the 81 team back from the Silverdome....
3. 1989 easily. I was a freshman. Went to almost every game. Other than their opener with Green Bay Premontre, That team dominated in the regular season. Average score like 32-6. They ran into a juggernaut, eventual championship Muskegon team in the first round of Class A playoffs when it was only A,B,C,D. Just four classes.
4/5/6 are tough. I'll give 92 the slight nod over 95 and 98. Full bias disclosure... I was a scrub/special teams player on the 1992 team. We lost three games to 2 state champs and one state finalist by a combined 15 points. The first to Notre Dame on a deep pass in the final minute. The second on a NAKED BOOTLEG in the final seconds to Kingsford and got stopped on fourth down from around the 2 in the final seconds against Muskegon Reeths-Puffer down 8. Ifs and buts I know....
1995 - My brother was on the team. I know all those guys. Great group. Lindstrom (RIP) was a stud. Nick Anderson on the line. Dave Nault ball hawking in the secondary.
1998- Jason Braun was like watching old highlights of Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson in person. Amazing. (His older brother Eric was tailback on the 1989 team and his other older brother Steve would've been starting tailback for 1992 team but tore ACL in preseason.) Put them back at 6 because I was at the Gladstone game where they got smoked. And didn't have to play unified Traverse City like 92 and 95 (not their fault I know).

Does this 2017 team get in with their recent run? Its so tough to compare given the significant change in playoff entries over the past 30 years. Thoughts? Who would they bump out of the top five (if they do)?
