U of M Football History Question

Postby Hueby » Tue Nov 20, 2012 9:32 am

Have a quiz question to throw out there. It deals with UM Wolverines football history.

Question: "Why would the Michigan Wolverines punt on 1st down?"

Hint- It involves an upcoming rivalry game.

The 1950 Snow Bowl. A classic.

upfootball nailed it! 1950 Snow Bowl. Here is a short clip on the game:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u41yqv-w5XA

There is another 8 minute version of the game out there on youtube for those interested. Years back I remember hearing Bob Ufer speak of the game, and it wasn't until the other day I checked the internet to see what was out there on it.

This Chuck Ortmann who punted 24 times (both teams combined for something like 45 punts) is from Milwaukee, WI. His high school football coach advised him to pick Michigan over Wisconsin and Kentucky. Ortmann played both ways and special teams.

You just don't see the "quick kick" anymore these days. Here's another little U.P. football trivial question:

"In the early 1980's what U.P. high school football program had a "reputation" for using "quick kick?" (Usually did it a couple times a year)

Hint- they are currently in the GNC.

No takers? :P Ok anyways the UP. school who was known for using the quick kick then- the Kingsford Flivvers. There was no internet/media coverage like today, but it was in scouting reports.

Sure enough, it got them out of a jam here and there!

My original question came up due to the excitment of the big game coming up this weekend- Michigan vs Ohio State. If you have time, watch this video:
