Scores are updated. Both Lakeland University and UW-Whitewater start conference play next week. St. Norbert plays one more non-conference game.

Looks like the lone U.P. seniors are doing well. Jonah Carlson has been starting at Center for Lakeland while Andy Cooper has been handling the punting and kickoff duties for the Warhawks.

Updated

UW-Whitewater played UW-Eau Claire in the rain, 14 of their points come from defensive turnovers. Lakeland loses to Concordia-Chicago for the first time sine 2012.

SNC game vs Grinnell was cancelled. Grinnell College (Iowa) cancels the remainder of their season due to injuries. Roster down to 28 players as 11 suffer season-ending or multiple-week injuries. Read players are demanding more money be put into the program for better facilities, recruitment and more coaches.

Last night while updating the scores, would like to point out a couple things...

St. Norbert's "Non-Conference" game against Grinnell (IA) was simply "cancelled." Didn't count as a forfeit win.

Scrolling down on this link will bring you to Lakeland University highlights vs Concordia WI. You can then watch clips of Muskies center #71 Jonah Carlson from Kingsford:

Here is an update on how Lakeland, St Norbert and UW-Whitewater are doing this 2019 season...

With Lakeland's tough 1 point loss in 49-50 shootout vs Eureka last weekend, they are down but not out. Their remaining two regular season games are respectively... Benedictine and Aurora!

NACC

Aurora (5-0, 7-1)
Benedictine (4-1, 5-3)
Lakeland (3-2, 4-4)
Concordia-Chicago (2-3, 4-4)
Eureka (2-3, 4-4)
Concordia (Wis.) (2-3, 4-4)
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-3, 2-5)
Rockford (0-5, 1-7)

Remember the Midwest Conference is split into two divisions, with the winner in each Division playing each other for the Conference Championship. Win your conference, make the playoffs. St. Norbert's next game is vs Lake Forest for the North Division Championship.

MWC

Lake Forest (4-0, 7-1)
St. Norbert (4-0, 5-2)
Ripon (2-2, 5-5)
Macalester (1-3, 3-5)
Beloit (1-3, 1-7)
Lawrence (0-4, 1-7)

Monmouth (3-0, 5-2)
Illinois College (2-1, 5-2)
Chicago (2-1, 4-3)
Cornell (1-3, 3-5)
Grinnell (0-0, 0-3)
Knox (0-3, 2-5)

UW-Whitewater has won some very hard fought games this past season. Two more games remaining and one of those opponents is UW-Oshkosh.

WIAC

UW-Whitewater (5-0, 8-0)
UW-Oshkosh (4-1, 6-2)
UW-Platteville (3-2, 6-2)
UW-La Crosse (3-2, 5-3)

Catching up on the last 2 weeks of the regular season...Some exciting things went on...

* The Lakeland Muskies could not upend the 2 teams they were trailing in the conference. They lost by 8 points to Benedictine then got crushed by Aurora.

* St Norbert College defeated previously unbeaten Lake Forest to win their Division. Then yesterday played Monmouth College for the Conference Championship. The winner of this game gets an automatic bid to the D3 playoffs. Here is how the game ended...

- St. Norbert led 7-3 heading into the 4th quarter. This last quarter was absolutely crazy! Will summarize what happened...

note: SNC= St. Norbert College, MC= Monmouth College

- With just over 4 minutes in the game, MC blocks a SNC "44" yd field goal try.
- MC takes over at their own 28 yd line. After a 10 yd pass play, combined with incomplete passes and pass plays for minus yardage, they face a 4-19 from their own 29 yd line. SNC sacks them back to the MC 20 yd line.
- Now SNC takes over at the MC 20 yd line, leading 7-3 with 2:39 minutes remaining in the 4th.
- SNC run plays lead to a 4th and 1 at the MC 11. SNC goes for it with a run play and MC hold them for no gain.
- MC takes over at their own 11yd line with 55 seconds remaining. 3 pass plays later they are down to the SNC 26. SNC intercepts the ball at their own 1 yd line...but wait, pass interference on SNC.
- Two plays later from the SNC 5 yd line, MC throws a TD pass with .02 seconds left. XP good
- MC kickoff to SNC 28 yd line, SNC returns it near midfield just inside MC territory where the tackle is made.

Monmouth 10
St Norbert College 7

* #3 UW-Whitewater went into the final WIAC game traveling to UW-Oshkosh. UWO trailed UWW by 1 game in the standings. What a game it was. UWO intercepted UWW 5 times times enroute to a 27-20 victory over the Warhawks.

With the win UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater share the 2019 WIAC Conference Championship. Caught the final minutes of the game on TV. The announcers described it best- how the series between these two WIAC schools over the years have been clean, hard fought and respectful.

Quick update:

UW-Whitewater qualified for the D3 playoffs and in the 1st round defeated Monmouth College 35-10. Munising's Andy Cooper did the majority of the kickoffs and punting (play by play had someone else kick off to start the game). This week UWW hosts Wartburg (IA) who defeated Hope (MI) in round 1.

A side note, UW-Oshkosh blew a 31-7 halftime lead against Central (Iowa) and lost 38-37 in OT. Central sent the game into OT with 16 seconds remaining and stopped UWO's 2 point try in OT.

Notes were from D3Football, you can check other games too. Yes, Mount Union (Ohio) is there again.

Catching up on UW-Whitewater....

Back on November 30, the WarHawks defeated Wartberg at home 41-28. Then last week down in Texas defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor 26-7. Munising's Andy Cooper continues to do a super job in the kickoffs and punting duties.

This leads us to today Sat Dec 14, 2019 at 2pm Central UW-Whitewater hosts St. John's MN in a semifinal game. The UW-Whitewater website gives links to watch or listen to the game. Appears it will be on ESPN3. Good Luck to Mr Cooper and his teammates!

After a thrilling 35-32 victory over St. Johns (MN), tomorrow Friday Dec 20, 2019 UW-Whitewater will play North Central (IL) in the D3 Championship Game (Stagg Bowl) down in Texas. Game time is 7pm. Hopefully you all get ESPNU up there in God's Country.

Here is a link:

Again, we wish Munising's Andy Cooper and his teammates all the best. Remember if you watch the game, he'll be doing the kick offs and punting for the Warhawks.

Well things didn't end the way UW-Whitewater would have liked it to. The Warhawks suffered a 41-14 loss to North Central (Ill) 41-14. North Central certainly deserved to win their first D3 National Championship. Boy did they ever look sharp. They also eliminated Mount Union (OH) early in the playoffs.

Andy Cooper kicked off twice- once to start the game and after UWW's first TD. He also punted twice. UW-Whitewater got themselves into a deep hole down 34-0 at one point, so they ended up going for it on a number of 4th down situations. Hurt by some short incomplete passes (one being a dropped pass) and they missed 2 field goal attempts. Late in the game after the Warhawks scored their 2nd TD, a different kicker kicked the on side try which UWW recovered but eventually could not convert into points.

But with that, Congratulations to Munising's Andy Cooper and his Warhawks teammates. D3 National Runner's Up is quite an accomplishment.

Along with Mr. Cooper congratulations to all the U.P. football products that came here to Wisconsin. Best to you all in your future endeavors. Where ever you go we hope you continue to apply what Upper Peninsula football brought to you.

Source for the game along with watching on ESPNU was the UW-Whitewater website.

Well that's a wrap!
