Well to start the 2nd Calumet couldn't get a shot on net on that power play. Afterwards during the period each team would have a power play opportunity but wouldn't score.

Then Cally would score to cut the lead to 4-2!

But a short time later Calumet would get called for a hooking penalty putting the Pilots on a power play with 1:59 left in the period.

Warren De La Salle' s Thomas Hernandez would pick up a rebound shot as he was behind all the traffic and score his 3rd goal of the game- which was the team's 11th shot on net in the game to give the Pilots a 5-2 lead.

Calumet trails 5-2 after 2 periods. They lead in shots 25-12. Let's hope their shots can start seeing the back of the net.

De La Salle would add an empty net in the 3rd period as Calumet falls 6-3.

Cally had to shorten their bench later in the game while the Pilots rolled 3 lines. The MHSAA announcers kept reffering to Calumet' s backup as a freshman, then sometimes a sophomore, etc I went back a couple posts to keep correcting it. Anyways he played really good.

For Dr La Salle it was their first MHSAA championship. For Calumet the announcers said it was their 9th trip to the finals, winning 6 of them.

Great season Calumet. Personally I admire your school for your "multi-sport" athletes, especially your hockey players who play other sports like football. Whatever your school does is working!

Wish the U.P. could form a seniors team and play in Wisconsin's senior tournament! But would never happen as Wisconsin has a "perfect" 8 sections.

Hope all the U.P. teams had a memorable season. Hope you finish off your year in fun and safe fashion.

Don't drink and drive, don't text while driving, don't play with matches...let's see what other safety tips out there...oh yes, don't bite downed power lines with your teeth! ha ha ha

At the college level we still have Michigan Tech surviving. They play again tonight and can sweep Minnesota State.

Here are TV6 highlights of the MTU/Minnesota State game which forces a 3rd game today.

http://www.uppermichiganssource.com/con ... 68093.html

Also Bowling Green sweeps #1 seed Bamidji State. What's neat about this is around here is Bowling Green' s goalie Chris Nell is from Green Bay and played at Notre Dame Academy. Did all the "Before and After" seasons too.

Also are clips of Calumet' s championship game. Again hats off to you guys on another outstanding season.

A side story if I could share: There is a young man from here in Ashwaubenon who played both hockey & football growing up. While playing football somehow ended up being the kicker. I remember he was recruited by the old coaching staff the school had early when he was an underclassmen in high school. The old football coach saw him kicking around for fun at a park. After the awards banquet his JV year that old coach gave him a football and told him to keep practicing & he'd be the varsity kicker.

He also played hockey. But in hockey while on the JV team he almost quit as a clique of "bubble players" were getting all the playing time on both varsity AND JV.

He had a rough varsity experience due to other politics.

He also refereed youth hockey since middle school. His junior year he was officiating some high school spring tournaments here in Green Bay. One "coach" from another team complained to the Tournament Director - who happened to be the Ashwaubenon High School hockey coach- how this young man was actually "calling penalties!!!"

So the hockey coach / tournament director heads into the officials locker room and goes off on the young man- yelling and swearing at him.

Eventually his senior year he kicks for the football team, then in hockey pretty much plays out his senior year without the coach ever really talking to him.

After high school he heads off to UW-Stevens Point where he is expected to take over the kicking duties for the football team after his freshman year. He enjoyed his year with the Pointers football team, but eventually after his Frosh season he would transfer out to St. Cloud State (MN) to finish school. He would also resume being a referee.

While in college he would get elevated to ref USHL games. Longer story short, he graduated college and the past few years works as a meteorologist for a TV station in north central Wisconsin, meanwhile on weekends is a referee for B1G hockey games AND the AHL!

He does a lot of Wisconsin and Minnesota games. I heard the AHL pays him really, really good too! And they fly him around to the games. In the AHL they have him as a linesman too...so he can break up the fights.

Didn't mean to get carried away, but for you U.P. hockey players don't ever rule out being an official, it can be very rewarding.

Michigan Tech wins today over Minnesota State, because Bowling Green upsets #1 Bemidji State this means MTU gets to host Bowling Green this Saturday in a one game, "winner take all" WCHA tournament championship game.

If Tech wins it appears they will get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The last couple months I haven't seen a WCHA team in the Top 20 rankings. Some received votes but that was it. It would be awesome to see a WCHA team tear it up and show the pollsters wrong.

Michigan Tech can be that team.

Saw the Red Wings play tonight. The Rangers were outskating them. Frustrating. Overall being off work this weekend it was a fun weekend of sports.

Off topic in college basketball our sons & their friends are upset with the Badgers basketball seeding. Caught the 2nd half of the UM-UW game. The other day at the gym could see but not hear MSU playing Minnesota.

My goodness with all due respect, Tom Izzo appeared to be losing it & was blowing a gasket. He looked like he doesn't enjoy coaching anymore.

Again good luck to Tech, I'm sure it is going to be an outstanding college hockey atmosphere up there this Saturday!

#16 seed Michigan Tech falls to #1 seed Denver 5-2. It was 4-0 after the first, then in the 2nd period the Huskies were down 5-0 before scoring & ending the period 5-1.

Recorded the game, just not sure if I want to watch it now.

Good season Michigan Tech.
