No, Hartland is not a co-op. That is their enrollment. Brighton is up there with 2247. https://www.mhsaa.com/portals/0/documen ... s/17IH.pdf

How does Hancock have an enrollment of 231 1/2?

No ha ha just kiddin'! Many hockey programs love traveling up there and know you guys rock and play awesome hockey. You guys are to hockey like...Coleman (WI) is to wrestling.

This is where I wish Jay Boxer could have still been coaching Ashwaubenon. I don't think the program would be in the state of disarray like it is now and I can tell you the Jaguar's hockey program would have been making yearly trips up there- especially the Copper Country.

When coaching he got them in the Coach Miller Tournament and the players absolutely loved playing up there! Everything from the hospitality/how they were treated, the competition and overall experience.

The Marquette at Calumet game has been cancelled tonight due to the weather up there. We still don't have snow down here but it's very very windy and frigid.

Hope everyone now can sit back and watch the 10-12-5 Red Wings host Winnipeg. Wings haven't won their past 7 games and are coming off a 10-1 loss against Montreal.

Notice more and more vacant seats in game photos when the Wings play at home.

Haven't dropped in on that Copper Country hockey site in years but remember really enjoying it.

Remember reading a story where some fan from one school stuck his head in the other teams locker room between periods and yelled "(Opposing team) sucks!" Then ran off. Can't remember who was playing who.

Marquette split their two games with Warren DeLaSalle. They lost 3-0 Friday then Saturday were down 2-1 in the 3rd when they tied the game then won in overtime.

This Tuesday they'll travel up to Calumet to play the Copper Kings.

Keeping an eye on Bay Port. They are suppose to be the second best team in the area behind Notre Dame Academy. The other night they played Ashwaubenon. The Jaguars tied the game 3-3 with .01 seconds remaining in the 3rd period.

Then Ashwaubenon scored in OT (against the goalie who transferred out of Ashwaubenon to Bay Port) to win 4-3.

Sounds like an exciting game in Marquette. Heard Hancock goalie Dawson Kero played great. Apparently in the 3rd Redmen had a shot that slowly rolled past the goal line but the ref lost sight and blew the play dead.

But like all the players know- that’s the breaks in the game- just like in the real world. You keep at it and move on.

Up here in God’s Country! Stopping here in Escanaba for a break. Some idiot was driving on M35 ....appeared he drove off then back on the road. Looked like the truck that passed me going 80mph. Karma!!!

While parked on the side of the road he got out and walked along the highway to check out his truck & a driver passing by hit their brakes not to hit him creating a chain reaction.

Also a nice write up in the Iron Mountain paper (on line) on the Calumet/Kingsford game. Sounds like this is one of Kingsford’s better team in recent years.

You Kingsford (and co-op) people gotta get out and support this team if you’re not already!

Hancock had one disallowed in the 2nd period too, and Teddy Randell ripped one off the crossbar, so both teams had near goals.

No doubt Dawson is good, having said that, the game wasn't decided by him. In the first period the shots were 10-8 MQT until they got a PP which turned it into 16-8 shots for the period. After the first, MQT only had 12 shots combined for the 2nd and 3rd. Hancock out shot them 11-5 in the 2nd, in the third it was 7-7 and in OT it was Hancock 2-0.

Wow even sounds like a more intense and exciting game than I thought. Good U.P. hockey!

Was just up in the U.P. and met a Vietnam Vet who was talking about growing up in Marquette in the ‘60’s. Speaking of missed calls/waived off goals, we were talking about the old Iron Rangers hockey. He told me in the Palestra they only had chicken wire behind the goals. So one game he was at, said the Iron Rangers scored on a controversial goal ....awarded a goal by the goal judge.

An opposing player was so mad at the goal judge he tried to hit the goal judge with the end of his stick-jabbing holes through the chicken wire trying to hit the guy before the officials were able to stop him.

In the High School Hockey Rankings, In D2 Marquette is ranked #9.

In D3 Hancock is #1, Calumet #3, Houghton- dispite their record is ranked #7 (performance vs good teams) while Sault Ste Marie is the other ranked U.P. team is #8.

Indeed the Flivvers beat the Redmen 3-2 Thursday night. A great win on many levels. Most of which is the fact they had us down 2-0 in the 2nd period and KHS scored 3 unanswered goals to end the period. Held on in the 3rd to win. Good for the psych as well as KHS plays MSHS in the first game of the tournament in February. This should be a good foundation for the rest of the season.

I listened to the game online. Coach Garrow was pissed after the game at his team. Said they don't have heart, they worry about what they look like instead of worrying about results. Said if they didn't want to work hard, he would start pulling guys up from the JV who do. He said he doesn't care if they have to play Saturday at Calumet, today they are going to work hard at practice. Won't be a fun day at Lakeview today.

3-2 win by Calumet against Marquette today.

I'd say it was a Tale of 3 different periods. 1st period calumet scored 28 seconds in, but that was the only only score of the period. 2nd period was littered with power plays by both teams. Both of Marquette goals were on power plays as they took a 2 - 1 lead, calumet scored to tie it up late in the 2nd on a power play. Calumet scored the game winner midway in the 3rd.

Late in the 3rd, the refs blew a quick whistle when calumets goalie tried covering up the puck but it got away from him. Marquette put the puck in the net about 2 seconds later because they kept playing, but it was waved off because Of the whistle.

First just wanted to send out heartfelt condolences to the Kingsford hockey community. Was sad to learn about the two classmates who were heading up to Marquette to support the team.

Got off the overtime list at work for a couple days and was able to drive up to the U.P. over the weekend. Between Escanaba and Gwinn it was pretty neat all the sports that were on the radio.

Caught some Bay College Women's Basketball, Escanaba vs Alpena in hockey, Kingsford vs Saline in hockey, Menominee at Negaunee in girls basketball, and the Detroit Red Wings playing the New York Rangers.

Listened to Kingsford' s post game show. The Flivvers lost 6-2 but a good point brought up- Saline scored 4 power play goals. Otherwise it was 2-2 when even strength.

Marquette lost to Sault Ste Marie that night 4-2. Then on Saturday Kingsford played Sault Ste Marie (Soo won 6-4) and Marquette came from behind- down 3-0 in the 3rd , sent the game into OT and won with 1.8 seconds left giving Saline their first loss of the season.

Had to have been a big win as the Redmen have been in a little slump of late.

In that Escanaba game against Alpena the Wildcats went on to win 4-1 and defeated the Mo's 3-1 on Saturday. Heard an Alpena player by the name "Limback." Guessing that was their former head coach's son who played for MSHS and NMU.

Ref: Coach Garrow- yeah he doesn't hold back. His post game interviews are usually enjoyable to listen to. Hopefully the players and fans hear "what" he's saying and not "how" he's saying it.

In the past usually you'll see huge improvements on areas he wants to fix.

Believe Marquette plays Negaunee next.

Some good World Juniors games- fell asleep in the 3rd in the game against Russia. Tomorrow Team USA vs Sweden.

Over the weekend, Hancock mercied Division 2 Novi 9-1, but lost to #2 ranked in Division 1 OLSM 3-2, the Bulldogs were up 2-0 in the 2nd but couldn't hold on. Real good showing against a really good team.
Houghton lost to Brighton 5-1 and beat Novi 3-0.
Calumet lost 5-3 to OLSM and lost 5-4 to Brighton.
Hancock hosts Kingsford Tuesday.

Quite a showing up there in the Copper Country! I see OLSM was also #3 in the "Super 10" (All 3 divisions combined). Brighton #2 in D1. Haven't done homework on Novi- believe a really good program.

I see the NMU Wildcats played out in Las Vegas. Some of my in-laws went to the game. They used to live in California but once retired got out- taxes were/are ridiculous. Then other in-laws flew out from the U.P. to see the Cats.

Caught some of the World Juniors. (Won by Canada) US gives up 2 short handed goals to Sweden. Both on the same power play. Heard one Team USA had a 3-0 & that transitioned into the first SHG.

Few years ago I did some research on Sweden hockey. Some things I remember off the top of my head was they emphasis goalie coaches at the younger level. The other thing was here in the U.S. the players get better coaching at the higher levels. Over there they put many outstanding coaches at the younger levels. The coaches then can't believe the skill and hockey knowledge the players have when they get to the higher levels.

Anyone see Joe Thorton' s fight the other night?

https://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=e8G7iH5ua1Y

This past week Marquette defeated Negaunee 8-0. Little surprised how the Miners program has been struggling of late.

Friday Marquette plays Grand Rapids Christian and Saturday the Bay Area Reps.

Hancock beat Kingsford 7-1. Nordstrom had 4 goals. Hancock had 3 on the pp but there is a reason why they were on the pp. They totally outplayed Kingsford in the 2nd and the Flivvs had to take penalties. Kingsford had a 5 on 3 pp in the first but couldn't score.

Houghton beat Negaunee 9-0 mercy rule after 2. Negaunee has 1 win in the conference in 6 years.

7-1 wow.

Also didn’t realize Negaunee had been struggling that long like they have been. In the early 2000’s they had really strong football, hockey , basketball and pretty good track teams.

The last I knew, Negaunee was a co-op with Ishpeming,Westwood,Republic and Gwinn so they should be able to be at least competitive.
