Morning!

Yes the Flivvers are playing well. Some of the "discipline" issues are beginning to be cleaned up and the special teams are improving. 5 on 5 this team has shown they can compete with anybody. Good health is also a key as it is for any team in any sport who are a contender. Negaunee at the MVIA Tuesday night. Lets pack the joint!

Good showing by the Copper Country teams down at the Trenton Showcase. Hancock took #2 in D2 Plymouth to a shoot out but lost 3-2. Then Hancock battled #3 in D1 Brighton 3-2 but lost.

Houghton beat Cranbrook in a shoot out 3-2, then beat Dearborn Divine Child 6-3.

Calumet beat Flint Powers 5-1, then lost to Warren De La Salle 3-2 in a shoot out.

The showcase does not play an OT. They go right to a 3 man shoot out if tied at the end of regulation. I don't really like it, but they are trying to keep the games as close to on schedule as they can.

This week Hancock at Houghton for the annual Wing-Ding game. Friday at the Dee 7:30pm.

Hancock blows a 3-0 lead after 2 and loses to Houghton 4-3 in OT. Taking bad penalties does Hancock in. 3 of the 4 goals were given up on the PK.

Houghton is certainly on the rise.

Hancock and Houghton will be playing during the first game of the playoffs February 26 at the SDC.

That should be a good one come MHSAA playoffs. Always thought that was a bummer how the Copper Country teams have to eliminate each other early on, but out of geographical reasons you have no choice.

Pretty neat the parity up there. Unlike around here where most of the best flock to one program and it’s usually the same team year after year.

Anyways it appears Marquette (along with Escanaba) had some good games at the Public School Showcase down in Chelsea.

The Redmen scored in the final seconds to tie Livonia Churchill (#5 in D3) 2-2, defeated Chelsea (#9 in D3) 4-2 then yesterday skated to a 0-0 tie against Davison.

Davison plays out of the Saginaw Valley League and were having a good season (15-3) heading into the game. Their goalie has a .947 save percentage.

This Tuesday 2-13-18 Marquette plays Hancock.

WCHA Standings to date from wcha.com

1. Northern Michigan18-6-2 (20-11-3) 58 pts
2. Minnesota State 19-5 (23-7) 57 pts

4. Bamidji State 12-8-4 (11-6) 42 pts
5. Michigan Tech 11-10-5 (15-13-5) 40 pts
6. Alabama-Huntsville 9-15-2 (10-20-2) 30 pts

Hancock beat Marquette 5-2 and are Conference Champs with one conf game to go. Catching the radio guys from Marquette after was comical. They tried to say Hancock was the chippy team and that Mqt got homered some how when Marquette had 2 5 on 3 man adv. and scored both their goals on the pp. Lots of whining after the game.

Calumet beat Houghton 3-0 in Calumet.

I did catch parts of the 3rd period and some of the post game show between Hancock and Marquette. Marquette was down 3-2 in the 3rd and applying really good pressure but just like that Hancock scored ...Anderson (?) from Nordstrom. Believe it was a 2 on 1 but then about 45 seconds later a Bulldogs defenseman scored on a shot from the blue line and game, set, match that was pretty much it.

Then a couple days later Marquette turned around and lost to Houghton at home 2-1. Houghton coach Corey Markham received his 300th head coaching win and what I read the players really back him.

Hard to believe the regular season is winding down! Marquette has their standard set schedule finishing with Negaunee and Calumet.

Don't know if anyone has watched any of the Olympics. On my way to work did catch some of Sweden/Germany and yesterday USA/Russia.

The Swedes looked very skilled- fun to watch. I see after the USA game many complaints no NHL players are involved.

This past weekend Michigan Tech played Arizona State. There is a good player for Arizona State named Brett Gruber who is from the Appleton (WI) area but played at Green Bay Notre Dame Academy.

I remember there was a time the website "Wisconsin Prep Hockey" had a fan forum. In my opinion you know why they probably really closed the forum down? Not just players but coaches were exposing Notre Dame Academy's recruiting methods to get around the rules and posts were being deleted. Not that I really care - honestly I could care less- but the programs losing the players were leaking what they could. So it made for a lot of entertainment.

Hancock takes down Kingsford 8-3 to fininsh the regular season 19-6. Nordstrom had 6 goals.

Houghton beat Escanaba 6-2. Out shot them heavily.

Marquette came back from being down 2-0 and beat Calumet 3-2.

Playoffs are up next.

Hancock vs Houghton moved to Tuesday because of Tech basketball at the SDC.

Unfortunately I've missed the last two broadcasts of Marquette Redmen hockey. They had that 8-1 win over Negaunee and as mentioned came back down 2-0 and won 3-2 over Calumet. They finish the regular season 11-8-1.

Haven't had a chance to view the MHSAA hockey pairings for D2 yet. Hek- haven't even really been able to follow the Olympics either! Just know the USA men didn't have a great showing.

Was down in Milwaukee after work and fell asleep in the 3rd period during the women's game. The Milwaukee area was pretty excited over the Team USA win over Team Canada on the women's side mainly because the media promoted the former UW Badgers players.

I see NMU eventually lost their lead in the WCHA standings to Minnesota State. See NMU and Michigan Tech had another outstanding series with each other which brought outstanding attendance (which it usually does).

Sounds good thanks! Marquette vs Kingsford should be a dandy. The Flivvs swept Marquette this season & it's hard to win a 3rd time so it should be interesting.

Though both Negaunee and Escanaba were down this season they should pair up nice and have a good game.

Kingsford just defeated Marquette in overtime 4-3. The Flivvers scored with about 1:14 left in regulation to tie the game at 3-3.

It was one helluva game. Too much suspense, drama and excitement. Kingsford was winning all the faceoffs in the extra session. Marquette had some good chances but it just wasn't meant to be I guess.

Sounds like a giveaway in Marquette' s end resulted in the score. Thanks to the Marquette broadcasters, players, etc for another fun season. Again one helluva U.P. hockey game.

Meanwhile the announcers said Houghton was coming back on Hancock. Bulldogs were up 3-0. Now it was 3-2.

No score from Negaunee and Esky.

Hancock wins 3-2 over Houghton. Two of the best hockey teams in the State meet too early in the playoffs.

I have to say.... watched some basketball and some hockey this year in the UP. Hockey is by far and away the better sport right now up here. Not knocking some fine individual basketball players up here, but the UP hockey teams play at such a high team level, its really fun to watch.

Kingsford ties Mqt 3-3 with 1:14 left in the 3rd, then wins it in OT 4-3. Esky beat Negaunee 9-1. Those two meet, winner plays winner of TCC/Petoskey in St Ignace.

Nordstrom with a nice night for HCH, 2 goals 1 assist in the 3-2 win over Houghton.

Calumet vs Jeffers, Hancock vs L'Anse Thursday, winners play Saturday 2pm.

Hancock meets Calumet for the District title at Michigan Tech on Saturday

In looking at Escanaba, it is clear that they are a very young team with lots of potential.

They will be graduating 5 seniors while returning most of their top scorers.

These are there top 6 scorers:

GRANT WICKHAM (A)—— Points: 28 Grade: 10
BRAYDEN STANNARD—— Points: 27 Grade: 9
BLAINE REINHART—— Points: 22 Grade: 12
CHRISTER CARNE—— Points: 21 Grade: 11
KYLE KRUTINA—— Points: 19 Grade: 10
ETHAN SILVERSTONE—— Points: 14 Grade: 10

Should be very competitive between Esky, Kingsford, and Marquette next year.

Yeah boy was I off on my Esky/Negaunee game. Escanaba really looked like they had been playing better hockey. rrnsports cut back on their hockey coverage to promote Bay College Basketball...which is fine & was a good thing. I guess I was just spoiled.

Wish Kingsford the best! May they have an outstanding playoff run! It’s been quite a season for them and these come from behind wins really show their character.

Looking forward to hear how the games go this weekend!

Hancock played their best game of the year, beating Calumet for the 5th time this year, 4-0. 1 in the first, 2 in the 2nd and 1 goal in the 3rd sealed it.

Hancock vs Big Rapids who beat the Soo in OT 4-3 in the quarter final in the Soo Wednesday 7pm at Big Bear.

Kingsford won 6-5 in double overtime over Traverse City Central to continue to the Quarterfinals. The Flivvers have played in a lot of tight games this year and really seem to come through in the clutch.

Up next is Ada Forest Hills Eastern, who has had little trouble in the tournament with anyone to this point.

Pretty exciting hockey up there. May the remaining teams keep it going!

Here are some highlights on the Hancock-Calumet game. They will be right after the MTU & NMU portion.

Beautiful save by the Calumet goalie in the video. This Hancock team sure can skate!

FYI Kingsford's opponent Forest Hills Northern Eastern is coached by former Michigan Tech Husky Tom Bissett. His wife is from Calumet.

There was a poster from Houghton on here some years back and that was one neat thing he provided too- all the Michigan High School Hockey coaches who were from the Copper Country.

I thought one was coaching at Traverse City Central- or used to?

Outstanding season Flivvers. Saw some highlights on TV6 website. Looked like a hard fought game from the video.

Wishing the best to Hancock!

Flivvers played a really solid game against a well coached and smart FH team. Kingsford actually outshot FH 23-19 despite a 3-1 penalties advanage for FH, but the Bird Dogs goalie was fantastic all game. Really good season for Kingsford. Those kids had to deal with some terrible adversity this season and showed a ton of character.
