With the football season soon approaching just thought I'd write a little info about the straits area conference. There's no reason why Rogers City, Rudyard, and St. Ignace can't make the playoffs once again because of opponents and quality players returning. Newberry finished last year at 2-7 and I don't see any great improvement in that record. Rudyard lost many quality seniors but does have a few quality players coming back, (the 2 Dempsey boys, Fountain, and they have another Salo coming up). Rogers City has some big lineman returning and very light competition. St. Ignace is going to be better at 21 out of 22 positions but that one spot was Gerritt Mortenson at QB and you just don't replace him. The best player in the UP the last two years will be back Austin St. Louis, and their best lineman and linebacker Grant Simmons is also returning. You have to remember St. Ignace was 1 play from going to the third round of the playoffs and was starting 4 freshman and would have been starting 2 others if it weren't for injuries. Rudyard and Rogers City had the better JV squads but everyone on St. Ignace JV's were freshmen. Should be a great season for the 4 straits area conference teams with a big circle around the St. Ignace versus Mcbain game.
