WIC vs Saginaw Nouvel

Postby haulpack » Sun Nov 12, 2017 10:05 am

Although Nouvels undefeated season(9-0) is impressive, the fact is they only beat two teams in the regular season with winning records(9-3 and 6-4) 37 wins and 42 losses combined.they did beat better teams in the playoffs 6-4,9-2 and 9-3.this should be a great game in the dome. :P

This article came out before Lincoln Alcona game:

Senior quarterback Tate Hausbeck, who stands 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, leads Nouvel’s offense and is 132-of-224 passing on the season for 22 touchdowns against two interceptions. He’s also a dual threat with more than 400 rushing yards. On the outside, Kenny Kujawa and Peter Snyder are Hausbeck’s favorite targets and 5-foot-11, 210 pound linebacker Alex Wrobel leads the Panthers defense and has his third consecutive season with more than 100 tackles.

Nouvel isn’t afraid to run plays in several different formations and patterns and with Hausbeck leading a group of 13 seniors, the Panthers have stayed calm under pressure. The Panthers trailed late last week against Harbor Beach, but rallied with two touchdowns in the final 6:21 to win.

“We have a group of seniors are really strong-willed and strong minded,” Nouvel coach Mike Boyd said. “They didn’t panic and they felt confident in their ability to come back in that situation.”

Hausbeck led the Nouvel offense with 5 of the team's 8-touchdowns, completing 13 of 20 pass attempts for 233-passing yards, with 3 TD's through the air, while adding 7 carries for another 82 rushing yards and 2 TD's on the ground.

Josh Kuligowski finished with 146 rushing yards, along with 2 rushing TD's to lead the Panther ground attack, while older brother Justin Kuligowski added 1-rushing TD, along with 9-tackles and an interception on defense.

Snyder led all Nouvel receivers with 5 receptions for 119 yards and 1-TD reception, while also contributing 10-tackles on defense.

Buckingham caught 2 passes, both of which were for TD's, and senior WR Kenny Kujawa added 3 receptions for 32 yards, while senior Alex Wrobel paced the defense with 18 tackles, including 2.5 sacks and 3 tackles for loss.

Alcona completed just 1 pass for 5-yards, however, the Tiger's rushed for an impressive 414-yards, led by the Hutchison twins, with Jack Hutchison leading the way with 23-carries for 178-yards and 2-TD's, followed by twin brother Tim Hutchison who carried the ball 18 times for 118-yards, while Stephenson added 13 carries for 96-yards and 3-TD's.

Anyone willing to make a prediction? I'm scared for this game. It should be a close one!

Little interesting tidbit from twitter:

Burt Angeli
@ScuttleBurt
Nouvel coach Mike Boyd quarterbacked the Saginaw Peter & Paul team that lost to Coach Chuck Greenlund's WIC Wykons in the 1977 state semifinals.

As far as a prediction goes I feel Nouvel has to deal with the travel but playing inside should benefit their passing game. I have heard that WIC plays pretty good pass D however. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!!

I'd like to see this game. Should be a good one!!

Nouvel Players to Watch

Quarterback Tate Hausbeck is playing his best football of the season, throwing for 233 yards in the Panthers’ win over Lincoln Alcona. For the season, Hausbeck has completed 145 of 244 passes for 2,377 yards and 25 touchdowns. Josh Kuligowski has run for more than 700 yards, while Peter Snyder and Kenny Kujawa each have more than 750 yards in receptions. Alex Wrobel has more than 150 tackles.

Iron River West Iron County Players to Watch
The Wykons are a power-running team with a power runner in Jayce Brockhagen. The 5-foot-11, 245-pound fullback runs a 4.6-second 40-yard dash and enters the game with more than 1,110 yards rushing with 18 TDs and 145 carries. He also plays linebacker. Quarterback Neil Tomasoski is a dual threat at quarterback, although West Iron County prefers to use him as a runner.

Nouvel coach Mike Boyd says:
“They’re very well-coached, very disciplined. They like to run the football, with several tough runners. They have good size. They do a number of good things offensively, which is what you would expect from teams at this time of the year.”

Playoff History
The teams have never played, although West Iron County and SS. Peter and Paul’s have met, playing in the 1977 Class C semifinal in Mount Pleasant. West Iron County won, 38-14, against St. Pete’s and quarterback Michael Boyd. Nouvel (enrollment 208) is 5-4 in state semifinals, and St. Pete’s was 0-2. Nouvel is 3-2 in state finals, with championships in 2006 (28-14 over Inkster), 2007 (12-7 over Blissfield) and 2011 (56-26 over Pewamo-Westphalia), with losses in 2003 (16-14 to Ravenna) and 1987 (14-7 to Erie-Mason). West Iron County (enrollment 245) has not returned to the semifinals since that 1977 win over St. Pete’s. The Wykons lost in the 1977 championship game to Orchard Lake St. Mary, 48-12.

Always find myself pulling for the UP teams to play well this time of year. Four good teams left in D8 and the Division is wide open.

Really lookin forward to the D8 Final this year. Would be cool to see the Wykons play for the first time (even though it would mess up my bracket).
