It sounds like Ewen-Trout Creek will be co-oping with Ontonagon. Which means all the teams will have two open dates to fill for 2017.

EWEN — Ontonagon and Ewen-Trout Creek will join forces for the 2017 season as one co-op 8-man football team.

On a close vote Monday night, the Ewen-Trout Creek Board of Education passed the resolution bringing the schools one step closer to consolidating both football programs.

Ontonagon has already signed off on and passed the resolution and it must now be sent into the Michigan High School Athletic Association by April 15. E-TC athletic director Shawn Brown

said the agreement will be sent to the state today.

The MHSAA Executive Committee will decide on the request for the co-op team on Apr. 24. Brown thinks the ETC-Ontonagon request has a good chance to pass.

“I know we have the support of our Western 8 Conference teams,” Brown said.

Brown said Ewen-Trout Creek’s decision to co-op with Ontonagon came down to numbers in their school population and the number of kids going out for football.

“Ontonagon has 112 kids in their school and we have 75,” Brown said. “We looked at the projections of the school population coming up and the numbers are just not there. We play 8-man football and the magic number to field a team is 16 kids, because you lose 2-3 kids during the season. We’ve never had big numbers in football and if the season started today, we’d have nine kids out. If we didn’t co-op, I couldn’t guarantee football. There would be an 80 percent chance of no football. We had no alternate plan.”

Brown also said that like other teams that have gone the co-op route, his committee was looking at what’s best for the kids-especially the younger players.

“There’s a huge difference having a 140 pound freshman playing against a 210 pound senior on the varsity team,” Brown said. “We are researching having a JV (junior varsity) team and that could happen. This would give the younger kids an opportunity to play against players their own age.”

Brown said E-TC approached Ontonagon about discussions of a co-op team and Ontonagon will be the host school when starting out.

“We’ll play under Ontonagon’s name and colors,” Brown said. “We’ll play all but one of our home games in Ontonagon with the potential for two in Ewen. The schools will practice in Ontonagon, too. The agreement is a one-year deal and eventually I’d like to look at re-branding the team.”

The two schools are also looking into intermingling the bands and the cheerleaders at football games as Brown said this was “a county-wide effort” and they wanted both schools to enjoy football.

Present-day Ontonagon head coach Ben Mayer will continue on in the same role for the co-op team and his assistant coaches will coach in the same capacity next year on the varsity squad. The junior varsity team is expected to be have coaches from E-TC.

Recently, the Ironwood and Gogebic Miner football programs became one co-op team and the Bessemer-Wakefield-Marenisco softball and baseball teams formed co-op teams.
